Practical method: Guarding the Five Gates (eyes, ears, nose, tongue, mouth): It’s not about becoming a statue, but making the mind the master of the senses.
- Eyes: See beauty or ugliness without craving or rejection. The eyes are just cameras; the emotional switch is in the mind.
- Ears: Hearing praise brings no wild joy; hearing slander brings no anger. Sounds are just vibrations in the air.
- Mouth: Avoid idle talk and harmful speech.
This is called "energy recovery"—reclaiming the energy that would leak through the senses, transforming the mind from slave to sovereign.
Story of Jia Titiao: The Republican-era master Jia Titiao was instructed by his teacher to practice "standing meditation" on Chengdu’s busiest Chunxi Road, training to remain undisturbed amid crowds, traffic, sights, and sounds.

Analogy: The mind is like tuning a string—"too tight it snaps, too loose it doesn’t sound." Or like forging a sword—too much steel makes it brittle, too much tin makes it soft.
Middle Way wisdom: Human suffering comes from swinging between extremes (over-striving vs. total laziness).
Practice: Find the perfect balance between tight and loose, firm and gentle. Work diligently but rest when needed; be sincere with others but maintain healthy boundaries.
比喻:理性如調琴弦,「緊則有斷,慢則不應」;又如鑄劍,鋼多則折,錫多則捲。
中道智慧:人生痛苦源於在極端間搖擺(過度努力vs徹底躺平)。

Transcending the Desire Realm: Mind forgets cravings. Free from attachment to material desires—you can enjoy but not depend on them.
Transcending the Form Realm: Mind forgets external conditions. Unaffected by favorable or adverse environments, living in inner peace.
Transcending the Formless Realm: Mind does not cling to emptiness. Understands "true emptiness gives rise to wonderful existence," and can create value in the midst of the world.
Sage in the flesh: Chongyang Patriarch promised that one who achieves this, though living in the world, has already entered the immortal realm in spirit.
Chongyang Patriarch’s poem: Describes the awakened state:
"Having understood, learn to appear foolish (great wisdom seems foolish).
In non-action, nothing is left undone (following the way of Heaven).
Worldly affairs before the eyes are just like this;
Thunder in the ears passes unnoticed (mind unmoved)."
Who am I?: The poem ends with "I ask the blue sky: who am I?"—the ultimate philosophical question. When you transcend the small self of name and identity, you touch the greater self that shares the same root as heaven and earth.
Final summary: Cultivation requires no money and no abandonment of daily life. Simply, in every breath and every step, become the master of your own mind.
超欲界:心忘念慮。超越物質慾望捆綁,能享受但不依賴。
超色界:心忘諸境。超越外在環境順逆,活在內在寧靜中。
超無色界:心不著空。超越對「空」的執著,明白「真空生妙有」,能在紅塵中創造價值。
肉身聖賢:重陽祖師承諾,若能做到,雖身處世俗,生命層次已入仙宮。

「氣了惺惺學得痴(大智若愚),
到無為處無不為(順應天道),
眼前世事只如此,

我是誰:詩末「借問青天我是誰」,這是終極哲學叩問。當超越了姓名、身份的小我,便觸及與天地同根的大我。
