But one Tuesday, I was surprised that Luna was not there to sing. “Luna is injured. She fell from the tree last night,” my neighbor told me.
We went to see Luna at the vet that day after work. One week later, Luna was much better, and we decided to build a safer nest for her. Because of the new nest, Luna became happier and more secure. Soon she could fly and sing again. She is now as vibrant as before!

At 6 o'clock every morning, while most people are asleep, 15-year-old Mia Chen is already awake. She cleans the stalls, feeds the animals, and prepares for guests to Sunny Farms. Mia's grandparents started Sunny Farms in 1965, and since then the whole Chen family has been involved. Sunny Farms used to be just a chicken farm, but now, with its apple orchards, flower fields, and various animals, it has become a favorite spot for families to visit on holidays. Visitors can pick apples, gather flowers, and ride horses. It is one of Mia's tasks to teach children how to feed the baby chicks.
For her work, Mia is paid $8 an hour. This summer, she expects to earn about $900 and plans to buy a new bike. Her friends think it's cool to earn that much money in a summer. However, for Mia, working at a family business also means making compromises. "I'd love to hang out with friends or go to the beach like other teens. My friends stopped asking me to join events because I'm always occupied in the summer." However, Mia also said, "But it's nice to experience both sides. Working with your family is wonderful. You become closer."

Around the year 500, people came to Mystery Island.
They used wood to cook and construct homes. Thanks to the wood, people had a good life on the island.
In their leisure time, they loved carving figures from large stones. With the wood they felled, they could transport the figures easily.
Wood was essential and used in every aspect of their life. Years went by, and there were fewer and fewer trees on Mystery Island.
Without enough wood to retain water in the soil, the land became arid, and crops didn’t grow.
So many trees here!
I’m thirsty.
And I’m hungry.
People started to fight for water and food. The figures were moved to battle areas to display their strength. The last trees were probably felled at this time.
Those who felled the last trees surely knew how vital trees were to them—but still, they did it. When the last trees fell, the people on the island fell, too.
Let’s not make Earth, our only home, another Mystery Island.

Many years ago, Lisa Smith bought a shelf from HOMEKIT. HOMEKIT is a popular store that sells kits of furniture parts. Buyers have to assemble all the parts themselves. It took Lisa hours to build her shelf. Lisa didn’t enjoy the process much when she was assembling the parts. However, after she finished, she felt proud of herself and her shelf. Later, she found that she loved her shelf more than any other furniture.
Lisa wanted to know if anyone had similar feelings, so she conducted a fun paper craft study. She invited two groups of people to participate. She called one group “makers” and the other “purchasers.” Makers were told to create paper crafts, like paper stars or paper flowers. When they finished, they were asked how much they would pay for their creations. Lisa then showed the paper crafts to purchasers and asked how much they would pay for them. The two groups gave very different answers. Though purchasers would pay only ten cents for makers’ paper crafts, makers would spend 50 cents! Interestingly, makers believed others would think their creations were worth that much money!
Lisa’s study showed that she was not alone in her HOMEKIT experience — we tend to value things more, sometimes unreasonably, when we create them ourselves. Lisa called it “the HOMEKIT effect.”
32. What did Lisa try to find out in the paper craft study?
33. Which is true about the paper craft study?
34. Sarah just can’t get her son Leo to read more books at night. Every time she tries to do so, there is always a lot of complaining and refusing. If Sarah wants to have Leo read more books by using the HOMEKIT effect, what should she do?

In the picture is a US power worker in the 1980s. Pictures like this appeared in many magazines at the time. In 1981, power workers in the US requested higher pay, and they decided to strike until their demand was met. The government feared there wouldn’t be enough power for the country if these workers didn’t work, so it agreed to give them the pay increase. However, the story didn’t end there.
A year later, the power workers asked for another pay increase. To get what they wanted, they reduced working hours and threatened to quit anytime. But this time, the government decided to resist. To conserve power, it introduced new regulations for people to follow. For example, each household could use air conditioning in only one room; radio stations had to stop broadcasting at 9:00 p.m.; shops could open only four days a week.
People’s lives were significantly altered. Without enough cooling to keep the house cool, people used fans all the time. Schools had to use lanterns because they couldn’t keep all the lights on. Offices couldn’t keep their computers running. Many people lost their jobs. For months, people were suffering the consequences while the power workers were fighting for their demand. In the end, the government agreed to the second pay increase. This picture shows what many people thought of the power workers during the “hot” time.
